network path not found

On a home network, CompA and CompB--both with W2K--are DHCP is enabled,
and IP and DNS server addresses are set to Obtain Automatically. Both
computers are visible in the workgroup, and CompA can access CompB
shares, but CompB cannot access CompA shares. The error message is:

\\CompA is not accessible.
The network path was not found

Disabling firewalls seems to have no effect. Where would be the next
place to look to see why CompA is not accessible from CompB?

Your first step should be to ping PC-B from PC-A, and vice versa.

The next step should be to revisit your firewalls. I have dealt with
plenty of posts where the author was prepared to bet a large
amount of money that he did not have a firewall, or that it was off,
only to find that there was a firewall bundled with his virus scanner,
and that it was very active indeed!

Thanks.

CompA ping of CompB failed. CompB ping of CompA succeeded.
Intuitively, it seems it should be just the opposite, since CompA can
access CompB shares, but CompB cannot access CompA shares. Anyway, what
does this tell me?

Oops. The router firewall was up. With it down, CompA ping of CompB
succeeded. However, CompB still cannot access CompA shares.

Your router is not set up correctly. I am fairly sure that everything
would work just fine if you connected the two PCs with a
cross-over cable.
