Hello all. I'm chasing a connection problem with one of my home computers.
I posted here about my current computer troubles yesterday, and after using
several anti spyware, HJT and winsock fix I still can't get online with
either IE or Firefox. But when examining the local area connection, it
tells me that the network didn't assign a network address to the
computer...so my question today is how can I best remedy this?
Thanks in advance to all who reply.

If you're going to start new threads due to impatience and frustration, at least be
kind enough to fill in ALL of the details. You left out when this issue was born,
the day after your visiting nephew went on a nightlong XXX surfing binge.

You also mentioned yesterday that you could ping successfully (ping wht you didn't
mention) and Ad-Aware would update, yet IE nor SB S&D could connect to the web.
Without an IP, Ad-Aware could not update and a WAN ping would timeout.

IIRC winsockfix removes registry keys for the TCP stack but does not replace them,
lspfix does.

Your HOSTS file may be corrupted with bad entries written in by the nasties that
have compromised the machine.

Once you know the machine is clean and if you still have IP assignment issues:

Shut down the machine/s on the LAN.
Pull the power from the router.
Pull the power from the modem.
Wait approx 30 secs.
Apply power to the modem and wait for it to finish synchronizing with the cable.
Apply power to the router and wait for it to finish synchronizing with the modem.
Power up the machine/s one at a time in the way you wish to order the IP's.
The machine/s should now be assigned a new IP from the router.
Run ipconfig or attempt net connection to test.

Hey Brian, all the details are there for anyone to read and I pointed out
that this was my second post, its not like I'm hiding anything. I feel that
you are twisting my story because you feel incompetent. (are you a small
man?) I've no idea who you are, but your attitude is a little shitty. Who
else agrees about Brian? I appreciate his efforts to help, but I'd like to
hear what someone else has to say.

I'm not convinced that there are any "nasties" as the HJT log didn't show
anything. Brian exagerates the porn activity and I've no evidence that
this is the cause of the connection problem, but its a good theory. I'm
open to other suggestions too.

My computer thinks it is connected and shows the connection as having an
active status and gives a duration time that is ongoing. Every ping
commands is good with no data lost, these are to addresses outside of the
LAN. I have no idea how ad-aware updates, but it does just like usual. I
am 100% sure that it updates.

I've already done the power down, power up thing with the modem and router,
several times.

Can anyone else offer a suggestion because I'm not buying the malware theory
anymore as no trace of any spyware, etc. has been found on the system. I'd
really appreciate some windows xp help and support now. Is there any of
that here?

Hi Raspberryjam,

How is this computer connected? Wired or Wireless? Do you have a Privacy
Service program installed? What Network Card is installed?
