If you enable sharing you should be able to ping each by IP. If not, I would
double check the zone alarm and other security software. Or turn off zone
alarm for a test.

I have the same problem, internet great, local net, no. I disabled all
security programs, no luck getting out on to the local net. For that matter
I can't even see my other computers.

On my other comp's I can see this one, but can't get in. My laptop has Vista
Home Pre and I have no problems accessing the third one with XP or my net
drive.

I am just about to give up and go back to XP.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard

Steve, what I have above worked for me between XP Pro And vista Home Premium

The only diff I have is I don't have Printer Sharing turned ON, as that is
only for the one computer with more then 1 user account

ip range added to zone alarm

Try uninstalling any virus scanner & personal firewall you have
installed?

There is a "trusted sites" setting in Norton Internet Security (I hadn't used
it before). Adding my computers there fixed it. The default is to reject
everyone. It seems to me that a better default would be to reject everyone
except 192.168.n.n, but what do I know; I'm just a user. Details here:

Thanks to everyone who gave me help.
