Hi,

Just bought a laptop. Went into the shop and explained that from time to
time I would need to transfer files from my PC to my laptop and vice versa.
The guy in the shop suggested memory sticks.
I explained that I am a 3d designer and that the files (quite literally) are
massive.
I assumed (after having used many external devices) that I should buy a USB
to USB cable. Like on my external hard drive and my MP3 player.
The guy in the shop said no, I would be better with a network cable.

So, I bought one.

When I have plugged anything into a computer before, a pop up appears
telling me it is connected or that I need to install something, so I assumed
that this would happen again.

Plugged the network cable into the laptop and the PC and bugger all
happened. Went to my PC and it isn't listed in there.
Tried to follow the set up a network connection wizard thingy but got
completely lost.
An icon appeared in my task bar telling me that a network is connected with
little or no connectivity.

WHAT DO I DO?

All I want to do is transfer files.

Did you get a crossover cable - assuming you're connecting the two machines
directly (without a hub)?

when you plug the ethernet cable into your machines you won't get a pop up.
instead you must access the laptop or the pc through my network places.
however, you need to set up a workgroup on the pc. then you must get the
laptop to log onto that workgroup. basically the shared folder will be
accessiable to the laptop, or vice versa - depending if you have either set
up the workgoup on the pc or laptop. so you will have to move your docs and
pics to the shared folder or you will have to right click on the individual
folders and allow the share option. by clicking on "enitre network" the
machine will begin the process of looking for the workgroup you created.
then all the share folders yith their files will appear and you can cut and
paste to you hearts content. (you may also map those shared folders via
tools in the file explorer too) if you have a wireless router, you won't
need to physically connect the laptop with the pc, but you will still have
access to your network group. what i have also used is a
program called hamanchi (himanchi - maybe), this neat program is a little bit
easier to connect the two machines via the internet. basically, you create a
group with your exclusive password on thier network, then you log both you pc
and laptop to that workgroup via the internet connection. then you begin
sharing files between the machines..... both mthds are a little tricky at
first but it becomes easy once you get the hang of it.......
