Network ip problem

I have a 2000 machine that is acting wierd and I can't figure it out. The
nic card will not get an address from dchp server, I can assign an ip to it.
But then I can't get out side my network (Internet) with this machine. I
have tried three different cards 2 wired and 1 wireless all act the same way.
I have done and inconfig /flushdns and nothing happens. I can ping the
outside world if I have their ip address, but if I try to broswer their with
the ip no luck. Anybody have an idea what's wrong, I have even done an
reinstall of 2000 with no luck

thanks

If you can ping by IP then the "networking" is working fine and you may have
been chasing a non-existant problem for quite sometime. If you can ping by
IP# but you don't get any name resolution then the problem isn't networking
but is DNS.

How is DNS configured (both client and network-wide, not just the client)?

The DNS is configured by isp which is fine because my other three machines
work great other 3 machines are xp the problem one is 2000 box. Why I think
it is in the network settings in this computer is because on a normal machine
you can put a website ip address and ie will take you thier this machine
won't , but I can ping the ip at a command promt.

on the bad machine and on a machine that is working open up a command window
and do ipconfig/all. compare the dns settings for the two of them, if they
are both configured by your isp then they should have the same dns server
names. if they do then try to ping the dns server ip address from the bad
machine to be sure you can talk to it.
