network / internet / router question

I use a Linksys Router 4 with a 4-port switch for my home network. I have a
DSL modem connected to the router.

Got new computer (Win XP home) and the network places shows an icon for a
Local Area Connection /LAN and an icon for an Internet Connection.

Question: the old computer, same op system didn't have both icons, just the
Local Area Connection /LAN. Do I need both connections? Does this allow me
to regulate the network LAN separately from the Internet connection? The
route does the work for the PPOE stuff.

Is the "Internet Connection" icon listed under "Internet Gateway"? If
so, it represents your Linksys router, and clicking the icon lets you
monitor and control the router's operation. See the router
documentation for more information.
