Network ID Greyed out

Hi

I have a problem with my workgroup network.
We have 4 PCs in a workgroup (one desktop W2K and 3 laptops running XP Pro)
One laptop won't connect to the network very well. I can surf the internet, and I can ping PCs on the the network, including the desktop, however when I try to synchronise files with the desktop I am told that the network is not present or not started. In Control Panel / System / Computer Name, Network ID is greyed out, so I can't 'remove' and add to the workgroup. Ant help appreciated.

Is the Workstation service running? (right click my computer, manage,
services...)
