Network help needed?

I currently have a small network running with windows and unix. I am trying
to install a router, to connect to the internet. I have put all the cables
in the correct places, and can still access my unix box, but when I connect
to the internet, it seems that windows reconfigures the unix settings and I
am unable to connect to it.
Am I therefore unable to run both the internet and unix through the same hub?
Would I be better to buy 2 wireless adapter cards for my desktop pcs and
connect wirelessly to my wireless router?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Jason,

I don't know any way for a Windows computer to reach thru the network, and
change the settings on a Unix computer. Is it possible that there's a Unix
setting that you're not aware of?

We can help you with settings for Windows XP, but you'll have to translate those
settings into Unix. Windows and Unix should be able to run quite well on the
same LAN, if you understand the settings on each.

Why not start by explaining, in more detail, how everything connects.

Before you connected the router, how were your IP addresses being assigned?
Is the router the only DHCP server on the network? If you check the IP
addresses on the Windows boxes and Unix box when the problem occurs, are
they in the same subnet.
