I've just tried to connect two XP Pro machines together on a LAN.

I ran the wizard on one machine, made the floopy, ran the connection on the
other machine. Booted everything up.

One machine can see the other, but when you click on it it says "you don't
have access" rights. The other machine can't even see the other. They both
have different names.

What the hell is going on??? I followed the instructions.,.

Have you got identical Users set up on each machine with identical
Passwords? (I'm assuming you have a peer-to-peer network and not a domain
server....)

When i click on the M windows network icon, it just says "xxx" is not
accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator .... The list of servers for this work group is
not currently avialble

That is possible. Should I try and log in as a guest on one of them?

if you are using a peer-to-peer network, then there is no central storage of
security data. Security data is held locally on each machine, therefore you
MUST have the SAME-NAMED users set up on each machine, with IDENTICAL
passwords and rights otherwise you won't be able to access the data on each.

Eh... what kind of office network is it that requires this ?

ANY peer-to-peer network requires that, ie a network that does NOT have a
domain controller where the security information is stored. A peer-to-peer
network (otherwise known as a workgroup) is just a number of computers (less
than 10) joined together by NIC's and a hub.the security data for this type
of network is kept on each machine, therefore for one machine to access
another, both must have the same named user set up with the same password
and the same access rights.

I really can't believe this. Are we taking about the same thing here. Ie
using the Set Up a Home or Small office network. To enable printer sharing
etc. All the computers have to be the SAME USER and SAME PASSWORD etc.

Nothing is mentioned of this or suggested in the wizard.

I agree the work group name has to be the same - is that what you are taking
about?

Have you set the "file sharing" permissions on any folders?

John,
You can set up separate logons on each computer - you just have to create
identical user accounts on each pc that match the one you are logging on the
other computer with.

Mike

Do you have to be logged in to those same accounts on both pcs or do they
just have to be created.

Right done that. Now I have a network that comprises of 2 pcs that can see
themselves but not the other!

Any more suggestions?

This is driving me nuts. I did it a couple of years ago no problem at all.
I've just changed PCs, added all the updates etc go to create the network -
nothing!!

Try logging on to each machine initially with the SAME user. See if you can
see the network then. (You may have to reboot each machine). Once you have
done that, then things should be OK.

FWIW, I had the identical problem trying to link up my XP laptop to my XP
desktop. I too was administrator on both PCs. Never got it to work.
Finally I was told to simply install NetBEUI (do not confuse with NetBios)
on both PCs and when, giving up in despair I did, they immediately found
each other and all was well. NetBEUI was on the XP CD. (Apparently this
however does not let you share an internet connection over the network).

This must be my problem as well I think. Nothing I do or try seems to work.

The nearest I can get is one PC seeing the other, but when I double-click on
it, it says I do not have permission (despite there being shared folders on
the other PC). The other pc just cant see the other at all.

This is a real bummer because the point of the exercise is to try and get
internet sharing - so your fix doesn't really solve the problem - thanks
anyway.

I CANNOT BELIEVE I HAVE TWO XP PRO MACHINES THAT CANNOT BE NETWORKED
TOGETHER. I KNOW MS HAS GOT PARANOID ABOUT ALL THE SECURITY RISKS BUT THIS
IS RIDICULOUS.

I am getting in this late but be sure both computers are using the same
Workgroup name.

It was a bad LAN on my MSI K7N2 Delta M/B i think as when i tried it with
just a PCI lan card all worked well first time.

I am now in the process of trying to the same thing with a wireless
peer-peer conection but I/m havinbg no luck with that either at the moment.
I think these MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR M/B are a little flakey to say the least.
