Network Error: "Limited or no Connectivity"

V

Verdagon

Hey everyone.

I've searched through this forum for this error and found about a
thousand of these topics... but after wading through about 30 of them
with no solutions working, I had to post my own topic. Sorry to make it
a thousand and one though.

I'm getting the "Limited or no Connectivity" error when I try to
connect to my wifi network. What happens is I go to the list of
wireless networks, double click on my network "linksys", and it says
"obtaining network address" for a very long time. Then it gives up and
says "limited or no connectivity". Now, I can connect to my neighbor's
wifi just fine. It says "obtaining network address" for only a few
seconds, then says "connected". So I'm not sure if it's a problem with
my computer, why would it connect to one network and not the other? So
this makes me believe it's the router's problem.

But that's not all. My mom's laptop can connect to my wifi perfectly.
No drops, no errors, all is as it should be with her laptop. If her
computer can connect to the router fine, and mine cant, then it makes
me believe it's my computer's problem.

Where is the problem and how do I fix it?

I've already tried installing a few SP2 fixes, but nothing worked.

I've tried the ipconfig /renew thing, and it gave me an error:
"Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection
: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its
media disconnected."

ipconfig /all gives me:

First of all, change your Wi-Fi network's name (SSID) from the default
value of "linksys" to a unique name. Your neighbors might also have a
"linksys" network, and you have to be able to tell which network is
yours.

I suspect that your wireless router isn't connected properly. Your
mother's wireless network connection is getting a public IP address
from Adelphia. Her computer should be getting a private IP address
(probably 192.168.1.x) from your wireless router. Make sure that your
cable modem is connected to the router's WAN (Internet) port, not to
one of the router's LAN ports.

Ah, you were right. It was plugged into the "uplink" part, not the
"wan" part. And it worked! ...for a minute or so.

I turned off the wireless router, then the modem, then i plugged the
modem back in, waited till the lights were OK, then i plugged the
wireless router in. I went back to my computer, connected to "linksys",
and it connected! I even got to load google on it. I went to my mom's
computer, restarted it, got it to connect, loaded a page on it,
celebrated, then came back to my computer. "Limited or no connectivity"
showed on the low right. Even restarting didn't make it connect. And
now, my mom's computer has disconnected and won't get on the internet.

You're welcome. If you haven't already done it, change the wireless
router's SSID from "linksys" to a unique name. You have to be sure
that you're connecting to your network, not to a neighbor's network.

Then, remove "linksys" from each computer's list of preferred wireless
networks.

Then, reset the cable modem and router like you did before and try
connecting both computers again.

I tried doing the entire off/on-in-order process again, and it's still
not connecting.

And I can't change the SSID until I can connect to it; once I connect
to it I can do that 192.168.1.1 thing. Unless there's another way to
rename it...?

I don't think the SSID of it is the problem. There's only a few
wireless networks around here, I'm not in a very dense area.

To change the wireless router's SSID, temporarily connect the router
to one of the computers using a network cable.

Moving the cable modem from the router's uplink port to its WAN port
shouldn't have had any effect on your computers' ability to make (and
keep) a wireless connection to the router.

That's strange... it doesn't work even when its connected through a
cable. Maybe I should have checked that beforehand...

So now that I know it's not a problem with the physical connection;
this "limited or no connectivity" error happens regardless of how I
connect my laptop to the router. So what's going on now?

Connect the computer's Ethernet port to a regular LAN port on the
router. Don't connect it to the uplink port or to the WAN port.

If you haven't done so already, unplug the router from the AC power,
wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. That might get everything to
work.

It's possible that the router's DHCP server isn't working. To see,
configure the computer's wired network connection with a manual IP
address of 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 and try to connect to the
router's web interface, which I'm assuming is at http://192.168.1.1.
For Internet access, set the computer's Default Gateway and DNS Server
addresses to 192.168.1.1, too.

It's possible that the router has become defective.
