Network disconnection error message

I am trying to set up a peer to peer network form my
notebook and desktop. I have the necessary hardware and
the cable connected but I keep getting a message that
reads " The network connections listed below are
disconnected..." How do I resolve this problem? The
wizzard will not let me continue until I resolve this.
