First, the relevant config:
WinXP Home
Linksys network card
Linksys router
DSL connection via PPPoE
Once I installed SP2, I began experiencing a 1-2 minute delay when
starting Windows. I can open any folders on the desktop except My
Computer and My Network Places; "Open File" dialogs are also off limits
(presumably because of the "My Computer" dropdown box). My LAN
connection icon also does not appear in the taskbar notification area.
At first, I also had no internet access; but lately, I seem to be able
to use the network (as long as I don't try to view it).
read have been either:
1) Get a router, or
2) Assign your IP addy manually.
Since I already have 1), I tried 2). Manual assignment does not work at
all (programs act as if there is no connection, despite what the LAN
icon says) unless I turn off the DCHP function of the router, as well.
Then, I couldn't access any sites by name until I also explicitly
assigned the DNS addresses for the network connection (something I
haven't seen mentioned in any posts I've found). Finally, I had a
functioning connection again, but upon rebooting, I *still* had the 1-2
minute delay! I still could connect, but woe unto me if I should dare
to open My Computer!
What else is there to try? Could my modem be interfering here, too?
