Network Connections

I have a single pc connected through a dsl modem to my isp. In my network
connections folder it shows two connections, one is the Broadband connnection
to Sympatico which shows the device as (WAN Miniport PPPOE) and the other is
a LAN or High Speed Internet connection which shows the device as (VIA Rhine
II Fast Ethernet Adapter). If I disable the LAN connection my broadband
connection also drops. Why to I need both of these is I am not using a LAN?

Because if you disable your Ethernet card, you can't use it to connect to
your broadband modem. It's a real adapter; the others are virtual and rely
on it.

Both are needed.

1. The VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet adapter is your physical network
connection which is connected to the DSL modem. While it is most likely
built into the chipset on the motherboard this is effectively the same as a
network card.

2. PPOE is a interface protocol. It provides no physical connection but
provides an interface to allow your isp to talk to your computer. It is used
by quite a few internet service providers to authenticate and manage
broadband connections. It stands for Point to Point Protocol (PPP) over
Ethernet
