Hi,

I have a laptop with ethernet and wireless connections. I use broadband,
though, and so these icons are *always* displayed as a network icon with a
red cross on it.

I've opened uo the properties of each and there doesn't seem to be any way
to get the icons to disappear. You can configure it so that the icon does
not appear when connected, but not when its not connected. Is there any way
to do this? Seems mad that MS would not allow you to do this!

Thanks,
Alain

If you are NOT using them, which is not clear from your post, disable
them - right click, disable, they won't show in the services area next
to the clock.

Now, keep in mind, that most of us that have broad band use wireless or
our Ethernet port on our laptops/computers - are you using USB?

Hi Leythos,

Yes, I'm using USB broadband, so don't use the Wireless/Ethernet
connections. I obviously may want to use them in future. If I disable them,
can I re-enable them easily?

Thanks,
Alain

BTW, I don't get a "Disable" option when I right-click on the icons. Do I
have to do it from the control panel?

Thanks,
Alain

Actually, the device driver has to support that option. For example,
the ethernet icon disappears in this case when unplugging from the LAN:

Do it from the Network Connections option via the Control Panel - and
yes, you can enable/disable them at will.

If your USB Internet stops working, you may have to enable the Ethernet
connection as it may fake a connection through it.

If you have a choice, you might want to look into switching your connection
from USB to ethernet. It's normally faster.
