Network Connection Icons Missing

Running WinXP on ADSL, I tried to set up ICS with a second computer, but
somehow ended up with the following problems:

1. Connect find any network connection or network adapter icons anywhere,
thus making it impossible to view properties, change IP settings, etc. I
noticed this problem right after the Home Network Wizard "Bridged" my
network adapters.

2. The machine is configured as "multi-homed", and I can see both adapters
in the device manager and both are working properly, however, on the second
adapter (linking the network), I cannot ping its IP address of 192.168.0.1.

3. The Network Diag tool found in Help and Support stalls at 15% and is
basically useless in troubleshooting the current issue.

4. RegEdit shows numerous network adapter keys and "Local Area Connections"
(1,2,3,4,,,,,,10), which tells me that every configuration in the past is
present within the hive.

Note: My workstation has previously run DSL with a home network without a
single problem. Unfortunately, I had moved and had to reestablish DSL with
another provider (SBC/Yahoo). The SBC setup CD installed a program called
connection manager that is also useless and annoying.

So, after all this rambling, what I really want (without reinstalling the
OS) is to somehow remove all former and present networking, NIC, dial-up,
and TCP settings and reestablish a clean networking environment on my
machine. I would also like to do this without installing the SBC Connection
Manager software. (in the past, I used a program called RASPPPOE) which
kicked ass and never gave me a problem.

Can anyone please send me a clue?

Thanks,

Rob

Addendum to my previous post... My DSL connection is still operational, but
my home network is AFU and "MSHOME" workgroup is not available, and, after a
couple of reg hacks, I still cannot access the properties of any network
connection or adapter. :-(
