I am running RIS from a server 2003 sp2 box.

I am trying to installed winxpsp2 onto a compaq dx2000mt

The nic drivers i have copied into the i386 folder and stopped and started
binlsvc.

The os installed ok except it doesnt join the domain which I have told it to
do.

When I check device manager it says the network drivers are not installed,
yet I have just stuffef a whole OS on there using the very same NIC drivers.

Please can someone tell me what is going on?

many thanks,

neil

If your machine does not join the domain then it's perhaps a little
premature
to conclude that your network adapter is not working correctly. I suggest
you do some simple tests first:
- Set an appropriate fixed IP address & DNS address.
- Turn off your firewall.
- Ping the domain controller by its IP address.
- Ping the domain controller by its name.

What do you see?

In my original message I indicated that according to the device manager the
network drivers were not installed correctly.

I subsequently have to install the network drivers from a usb memory stick.
It would be better if RIS did this for me.

Evidently the reason why the computer is not joining the domain is because
of the netwrok drivers being missing. I cannot ping or obtain an IP on
account of the network drivers being missing according to the device
manager.

I know that you mentioned the device manager error report but
I chose to ignore it for the time being because of conflicting
evidence.

You have now established beyond doubt that your network
adapter does not work. I recommend that you insert a different
adapter (they are dirt cheap) and see if
- the machine recognises it
- you can ping it
- you can join the domain.

I have 30 compaq dx2000mt pcs and this affects evey single one.

The adapter is an intel Pro/100 ve

It is strange because without a working NIC i guess the OS would not install
at all. Yet the netwok card needs to be reinstalled upon completion of the
ris installation.

..

Are you saying that you can solve the problem by re-installing the NIC?

If not then have you tried a different brand NIC?

The nic is part of the motherboard of the PC's that we are under contract to
buy.

I am unable to change the specification of the PC or NIC.

Out of 30 computers that came in 2 seperate batches I think it unlikely that
all could have failed.

As i said after the ris installation has completed, if I go into device
manager I can see the nic name with the drivers not installed correctly at
which point I have to load the drivers from a usb stick. Whilst the correct
drivers are on the ris server with the NIC not operational it will not go
and get them.

You can install a second network adapter even if the
main network adapter is integrated on the motherboard.
It's what I would do in order to get a handle on the
problem.

I note that you describe in your reply how tedious it is
to get the correct network driver but you do not actually
say if a re-installation is successful.

I am not allowed to open the PC boxes as this would invaildate the service
agreement we have.

The reinstallation of the nic drivers after ris has finished is successfull.
The same driver files are used on both the ris and the usb stick i am using

After several posts we have finally established that
your Intel NICs drivers failed to survive an SP2
installation. They must be re-installed in order to
restore network connectivity. The whole thing feels
like extracting a wisdom tooth from an unwilling
patient . . .

I suggest you have a look at your event viewer.
You should also check out this link:
http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-009718.htm
Look for TCP segmentation.

As a test I suggest you re-install the NIC driver
***before*** the SP2 upgrade. Your own installation
might be different from the factory installation and might
survive the SP2 upgrade.

the only thing is it wasnt an upgrade to SP2 but a clean install using the
and original microsoft licensed windows XP disk with SP2
