Network Browsing Problem

Is there a good resource on troubleshooting network browsing problems in
Windows? We have about 8 Windows 2000 workstations and a Windows 2000
server on our network. The server is just doing file and print sharing (and
tape backup). All was working fine until we patched the machines for the
RPC vulnerability. The RPC patch said it required SP3 or 4. We put SP4 and
the RPC patch on all machines, and now we are having trouble browsing the
machines in Network Places. I have not found a specific pattern to the
problem. A couple of machines seem to be able to see the server in the
browser most of the time. A couple of machines haven't seen it since the
patches were installed. Most of the machines can connect using the Net Use
command to map a drive. A Windows 98SE machine cannot even connect with the
Net Use machine.

All machines are using TCP/IP with Netbios enabled. All but the server are
on DHCP, server has fixed IP. They have no trouble getting IP addresses,
and can ping each other OK.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled network cards and all network components,
and that seems to make the machines more likely to be able to browse each
other, or at least able to map drives with Net Use, but the problem remains.

Error messages I get (most common):
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
The network path was not found

Is there a resource that explains how to do things like check which machine
is the master browser, and what entries it has, and which windows system
files are involved? I have had this type of problem a lot over the years
(this is the worst) and I know other people are constantly having this
problem. Seems like someone would have written an in-depth troubleshooting
guide.

Thanks for any information.
