While this may have nothing to do with the problem:
To my previous post, I should add that the hard drive in the Dell was
just replaced (Guarantee workdone by a Dell contracted technician) .
He installed Windows from the xp-home-sp2 disc originally supplied by
Dell. The technician then downloaded the drivers from the internet
with another computer (PC), made a CD and installed them on the Dell..

Since the operating system was reinstalled verify that the Windows Firewall
is either disabled or has the file and print exemption enabled and it would
probably make it easiest for you if the computer name and workgroup was the
same as it was before if you can remember that or rename the computer to
something more sensible than probably it was left after the reinstall of the
OS.
