Network access from XP to w2k getting network path not found

Hi

This is driving me to distraction ...

I have a network with 4 machines set up as follows:

1. Windows 2000 pro on workgroup WG1
2. Windows XP Pro on workgroup WG1
3. Windows 2000 pro on domain D1
4. Windows XP Pro on domain D1

All connected using an Ethernet switch, plus a DSL router that also acts as
a DHCP server.

All machines get the IP settings etc from the DHCP server OK, all can access
the internet.
All machines can ping each other by name and IP address.
All except machine 4 can access shares on each other.
I have a printer on machine 1 that is shared, and can be accessed by
machines 2 and 3.
Machine 4 can access shares on machine 2 and 3, although I do have to
authenticate (no problem with that).
When trying to browse or directly access any share on machine 1 from machine
4, I get the error "The network path was not found".

I have enabled netbios over tcpip on both machines, there are no related
entries in the event logs. I have tried disabling firewalls (commercial
firewalls, not the XP built in one, which is switched off on both XP
machines) - this makes no difference.
Moving machines from domain to workgroup or vice/versa is not an option.

I would be grateful for any clues as to what to try next.

Thanks

Turns out this was a problem with the firewall on machine 1 - probably at
device driver level as the problem still occurred even if the service was
stopped!
