network 2 laptops with xp

hello, I just restored one drive on a laptop and now I'm trying to reconnect
file and print sharing on the workgroup name. Each computer only sees itself
on the workgroup. I've set file and print sharing so the firewall does not
block the c drives but I must be forgetting something since the laptops do
not see each other. What did I forget?

Maybe you forgot to enable "simple file sharing" this would allow things to
be seen from one another.

How are the two connected?

If directly to each other, then, did you use a crossover cable?

Used a cat5 between the two of them...it worked great before I restored one
today, and now I can't remember what I did to set it up last year....

I checked everywhere that asks for file sharing (all checked) and found one
in file options for simple file sharing and that is checked...darndest
thing..

I noticed in user profiles on the restored computer I have 2 listings:
MOMMY\Admistrator and MOMMY\Anita. On the other computer I have
MCSNOW\Anita.
On the restored computer when I click on the network group I get a window
pop up saying I may not have admistrative rights, etc....
Is there something about the user names preventing the file sharing??

Well I've re-traced all the setup for basic (peer to peer) network file
sharing on the restored computer, but the computer does not even see itself
on the network or the shared folders I picked on the c drive. I've turned
off firewall and disabled Kaspersky ( even though I had the issue before I
installed Kaspersky).
The problem must be something on this computer??? I've manually set a ip
address and subnet mask.
What is blocking the network setup???

What IP and Subnet did you use?

162.168.1.101
255.255.255.0

Should work, index up on the 101 for the other computers.

one end they both see it as disconnected. And I thought this would be

Are you connecting through a switch or router? Or are you just using one
cable? If one cable it has to be a cross over cable other wise it won't
work.

Its a cross cable which I had working before I did a complete restore on
one laptop..

And the properties of the drive you want to share you have on the sharing
tab and then permissions you have everyone set to allow full control change
and read checked?

Yes, just checked both computers and the boxes are checked and both have the
same share name c

The the sharing and permissions are set for full control. I also just right
clicked on 'my Network places' in explorer and both computers see each other
and the shared folders. There must be something simple preventing them from
both showing up on the workgroup....both computers have the same
adminstrator name, each computer has its own name...I'll keep playing at
it..
