Network 2 computers together (don't laugh)

Sorry for such a simple question (I am an application person - not network
person).

I have a XP machine and a NT machine with a router connection in between.
What is the best way to be able to see folders on each other? I have tried a
few things and nothing seems to be working. I can ping the NT machine from
the XP, but not vica versa.

{you can stop laughing now}

Thanks!

1. If the XP machine runs the original or Service Pack 1 versions,
disable the Internet Connection Firewall on the local area network
connection. If it runs Service Pack 2, enable the exception for file
and printer sharing in the Windows Firewall.

2. Disable and un-install all other firewall programs (Norton, McAfee,
ZoneAlarm, Sygate, PC-cillin, etc) while troubleshooting. A typical
home broadband router acts as a firewall, protecting your computers
from incoming access by other Internet users. When un-installing a
firewall program, use the un-install procedure provided by the
manufacturer . Don't use Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs,
which might not completely un-install it.

3. It isn't strictly necessary, but specifying the same workgroup name
on both computers makes networking a little easier.

4. Once everything is working, re-install any firewall programs, if
desired.
