Netscape Woes

I'm running XP SP1.
I hadn't used Netscape 7.0 for a while & when I went to use it the
other day, it wouldn't open. No error msg...it just didn't do
anything.
I tried uninstalling it & installing Netscape 7.1, but the same thing
happens. That is, nothing!
Since I last successfully ran Netscape, I have installed Firefox 0.8.
Could there be a conflict of some sort?

Interesting question to pose in a Microsoft newsgroup. hah

Firefox working? Use it - it uses far less resources than its cousin
Netscape anyway. Remember - they are all based on the same "Mozilla" roots.
As for conflicting with one another - I wouldn't think so - but who knows.
Other than Firefox/Firebird, I have purposely avoided the evils of Netscape
for years now.

My recollection on this is fuzzy, but I think that a corrupt cache file
can cause this. My suggestion would be, if possible, to completely
delete your entire old profile so that Netscape can't find it. If there
are data files there that you need (very possible, including E-mail,
book marks, cookies, newsgroup setups, etc.), then try clearing the
cache file (you can just delete the entire folder).

Comment, don't use Netscape 7.0. It had some serious problems
(including a configuration file that just grew forever without limit,
could get up to hundreds of megabytes). This was all fixed in 7.1. In
addition to looking in the profile(s), look under Application data /
mozilla for files associated with netscape (again, if you don't need any
of the old configuration files, deleting everything is the cleanest way
to start over).

Netscape 7.1 is a great browser. And it's fully compatible with IE
(and, as far as I can tell, everything else). You can even have
multiple instance of IE and multiple instances of Netscape all open at once.

I was pleasantly surprised by FireFox. Aside from it using less system
resources, the bonus of it coming with AdBlock is nice too. I also like the
way it easily handles cookie blocking on a "by site" basis in the same
dialog box that asks if you want to accept the cookie. I seldom use I.E.
after installing FireFox.

I agree with t.cruise. I still have to use IE on sites like
"premier.dell.com" and such - where even Netscape (hate to burst your
Netscape compatability bubble there, Barry) does not work right. The fact
is some people build their sites around one browser - IE.

I know people who design web pages and test them on every available
browsers.. Firefox seems to be preferred by many of them, as it keeps what
they designed as intended - where both IE and Netscape change things
(interpret them) in ways that seem bizarre - and neither in the same way as
any other browser. hah

I don't know what's bothering Netscape, but I can tell you for certain
it isn't Firefox. I've got IE, NS6, NS7, and Firefox all running on
this machine. None of them bothers the others.
