Hi folks,

I'm running IE6 under Win 98SE and I have an odd problem
with my favorites. When I enter an address directly into
the bar, it works perfectly. But when I use a favorite,
then I get the message: "Unable to find the
file 'http://www.microsoft.com/' check that the file and
etc, etc, etc."

When I say OK I get an error message "Unable to find the
file: NETSCAPE.LCK" This happens even if I enter the
address, go to the site and then save it as a favorite.

I've downloaded all of the latest patches for IE6 and I
have a fully up-to-date copy of McAfee running.
SImilarly, Norton Utils says that all is well.

I've never run Netscape on this machine and there are no
files with a .lck suffix. I've tried downloading
Netscape.lck and storing it in the Windows folder, but
this didn't help.

Any ideas?

very strange but how about try to in
ie,tools,options,advanced,uncheck 'enable third party
browser extensions',,apply. and try again. if it works, you
have a hijacker hiding in there.

Thanks for your help Billy,

I had a hijacker. I found a program called Netcomplete
had been installed (God knows how, it was dated 1996).
This had associated the urls with Netscape.

I cured the problem by removing the program and then
resetting all of the IE options to default.
