When I try to download files using Netscape 7.1, I get the
message "...file could not be saved because source file
could not be read."

Suggestions??

thanks

Contact Netscape. This is a newsgroup for Windows XP and other Microsoft
Products. I would suggest using IE which comes on your computer.

And you're posting a question about the Netscape browser in a newsgroup for
the Windows XP operating system because....?

....because...IE freezes up and I switched to Netscape out
of necessity...see my post earlier today at

perhaps you can help me with that original problem

Hey - stop sounding like me! Only I can sound like me! ;o) That's my line!
;o)

So you figure that between MSIE **and** Netscape friggin up that maybe it
is the underpinning Windows XP, eh?

Could be ..

I'd do a checkdisk on the harddrive to see if everything is A-OK there.

So ... did you try the advice in the first response to your earlier post
(clearing temp files)?

I'm not so sure that the second response to your earlier post is
correct, but I'm no Msft expert. It seems to me that IE 6 SP 1 is, in
MS's own words: "a full installation of Internet Explorer 6." The
problem with using NS to download this may (repeat may) be caused by the
use of proprietary MS technology, such as ActiveX. If you go to the MS
download page and select the link for "Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack
1" you'll eventually see that "Download Size: 480 KB - 79324 KB." What
this means is that you initially download a 480 KB file called
ie6setup.exe, which when executed goes back to some MS server to
download the rest of the 80 MB. The catch may be that the 480 KB
initial download may require ActiveX or some other s/w not available
when using Netscape in order to continue. Catch 22 indeed.

(PS: how fast is your internet connection? If you're using a modem,
your PC may well "freeze up" using 100% resources for quite a while
during the download of 79324 KB.)

It's a fact though. Netscape's gone belly up. MSIE 'n Mozilla are
probably better choices as they will be the versions that keep
current.

Opera's catching on fast too...

It's not bad mouthing. Netscape is toast.

5 Steps to computer safety:
1) Use a good quality anti-virus, and keep it up-to-date.
2) Use a firewall. The one in XP works fine, but there are better ones out
there.
3) Keep Windows up-to-date. It's your choice whether or not you want the
recommended updates, but the critical updates are just that - critical.
4) Beware of adware and spyware. There are many programs that will help to
protect your computer, but it's up to you to prevent it as well. Make sure
you read the agreement of the software before you install it. It should
tell you if it will be installing any additional programs.
5) Be cautious of attachments. Microsoft NEVER sends out attachments via
email. Always scan all attachments before opening them.

Oh, BTW. You think MS does a lot of bad mouthing? Look at Apple. On their
commercials, they talk about problems with Windows, but they don't tell you
that those problems were in 98, and not in XP.
(Shouldn't there be a law or something saying that if you compare another
company's product with yours, you have to use the company's most recent
version?)
