Netlogon service problem

danieltan

In my event viewer i noticed that netlogon services has problem. It
started first and then followed by dns, which is incorrect sequence.
The event id in event viewer is 5781. The error is as below. Currently
i'm using Win2000 AD domain and dynamic update. I've refered to
article Q193888 which describe this problem , but don't quite
understand how to solve this. Anyone pls help. Thanks

"Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records
failed because no DNS servers are available. "

The first thing to do is to make sure that dns is setup correctly on the
domain controller. The domain controller must point to itself or other
Active Directory domain controllers in the domain running dns as their
preferred dns server and never use an ISP dns server in the preferred dns
server list. The link below explains this in more detail. I would also run
the netdiag and dcdiag support tools on your domain controller to see what
else is found as a problem if anything. --- Steve

I would do what Q193888 suggests as a last resort. It states that the
problem usually happens on older hardware and the article itself is from
11/2002. Be sure to run the netdiag test also to see if any problems are
reported. The dcdiag results do show a significant problem with the computer
account which may or may not be related. Find that domain controller account
in Active Directory Users and Computers. It should be in the domain
controllers container. Right click and select properties. The option under
the general page for "trust computer for delegation" must be checked
indicating it is enabled. After that, wait a few minutes and run your dcdiag
test again to see if that error goes away and if the events are still
recorded in Event Viewer or not. It also seems that this domain controller
is a remote access server? That in itself is a special challenge. Go to
networking properties/advanced/advanced settings and make sure that the
network adapter that is used for the internal network is at the top of the
list for "connections". --- Steve

Steven, i only have one nic in my server. Yes the DC is RAS but i have
not enable the connection. I have got the result from dcdiag and
netdiag but not yet check the event viewer. Does computer account
related to delegation ? Pls tell me anything wrong. Thanks

Your dcdiag and netdiag looks good and the computer account problem is
fixed. You did not post the whole netdiag results, but if everything else
passed you are probably in good shape. Like I said, RAS on a domain
controller can add extra problems. Be sure that the internal lan adapter is
at the top of the list as I suggested previously even if RAS is not
currently being used. If problems are still shown in Event Viewer, consider
disabling RAS to see if that fixes it or disable the second adapter [if it
is not already].. --- Steve

Hmm. I am about out of ideas on this one. I suggest you try posting in the
win2000.active_directory newsgroup and be sure to give specifics of you
domain controller configuration and paste your netdiag results with your
post. --- Steve
