NetBEUI Windows 2000 SP4

G

Greg Patrick

We are having trouble with a dos based machine attached to
a glass cutting line that needs to be accessed across our
Windows 2000 Network. The dos based machine is set only
to use NetBEUI and can not easily be changed. We tested
another 2000 computer that only had SP3 installed and
there were no issues. The problem we have is the computer
with SP4 came installed with SP4 as part of the OS and we
need a solution that does not require re-installing the
entire os and all software packages required as it is a
time consuming and production stopping problem. If anyone
knows of any solutions to this NetBEUI problem, it would
be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to load SP3 on the system? Does it give you an Error?

Brian,

It was suggested that I not attempt to load SP3 back over
the top of SP4 as it may cause instability within the
system and may cause more problems than it solves. Can
you confirm this? If it won't then I am willing to give
it a try.

Greg

Here is the link. One thing to remember, if the issue is important enough
call us right away to open a support case. Most of the MSFT people in the
news groups are responding while we have customers on the phone. In fact, I
am still taking calls for the day and on a call right now.

Newsgroups are free support, so hopefully we can help and point folks in the
right direction. But if the issue is urgent enough, calling is a great
option. :)

A good option is web support. I think it's 100us. Check the web page for
more info. I don't have any ideas off the top of my head otherwise I mention
it. Sorry :(

Brian,

The problem isn't super urgent, but it will need to be
resolved relatively soon. I will have to speak to my
superiors about paying for support, the may consider the
whole rebuild a cheaper option. What is the cost for the
telephone support? And I think I should mention that I am
in Australia.

Many thanks
Greg

That was more of a general question. I don't know of
anything that changed
relating to netbeui that changed between SP3 and SP4.
That is why I was
curious. I'd open a support case, and we can look at the
network traces and
such.

From a support perspective, if someone has an issue let's go ahead and get a
case open. That we in support can get something we can wrap our hands
around. This might be something that changed in the code, who knows. So
someone with this issue let's open a case :)

I just had the exact same problem occur. I had a PC using NETBEUI to
talk to some CNC equipment, which was working fine the night before.
The next morning, I installed Service Pack 4, and now it can't see the
equipment. A PC right next to it, with only Service Pack 3 can still
see the machines just fine.

I saw there were a couple of security related issues for SP4, but I
logged in as Admin and still couldn't connect, so I assumed it wasn't
those.

Ok, well I opened a case, and they confirmed it's a bug. They said it
appears to be a "check that is too strict which was added during the
security push introduced in SP4."

They are in the process of developing a hotfix for it.
