Neither net view nor "computers near me" can see LAN computers in WinXPpro SP2

Using a Cable/DSL router which provides DHCP IP adresses. Have checked the XP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285035

and at somewhere else for xp (similar info), and noted If the procedure does not resolve the difficulty, force a browser election by restarting all computers in the workgroup. That is easier said than done as I'm using a hardware router, so I'm not sure that the router an INEXQ ref: ISW054t gets involved in an election or not.

noted regarding win 3.1 / 3.11 see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;139910 workgroup name has to be same as logondomain entries in network section of System.ini etc.

Any suggestions??

Oz,

How many computers do you have? Are they all Windows NT/2K/XP? The router
should not be involved in an election - it's only a switch on the LAN, it has no
other presence.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same browsers.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the reply,
I have 3, 2 are on WinXP SP2 (PC0, & PC1), on Ethernet P2P workgroup, and
one Win2K SP4 (PC2) on wireless lan WLAN from the INEXQ AP and INEXQ
wireless card CRO45g using shared WEP. All get DHCP from the router.
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], restrictanonymous = (0)
and
restrictanonymoussam = (1)
Have used Browstat.exe got main computer PC0 as master no backup. However
for browstat GB 1 MSHOME ='Unable to get backup list: The list of servers
for this workgroup is not currently available'.
With browstat VW 1, I get:
Remoting NetServerEnum to \\PC0 on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{3E7E467D-7339-4F2A-9AF0-B2CA920A251B} with flags
ffffffff
1 entries returned. 1 total. 20 milliseconds
\\PC2 NT 05.00 (W,S,NT,PBR)

Addressing works OK using \\netbios or \\192.168.62.nn
I have Used nbtstat-n
Got the following nametable on Master & similar on PC1 but only PC1 listed
____________________________________________
nbtstat-n
LAN:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.62.n0] Scope Id: []
NetBIOS Local Name Table

PC0 <00> UNIQUE Registered
PC0 <20> UNIQUE Registered
MSHOME <00> GROUP Registered
MSHOME <1E> GROUP Registered
MSHOME <1D> UNIQUE Registered
..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered

On PC2 got

Node IpAddress: [192.168.62.n2] Scope Id: []

Name Type Status
---------------------------------------------
PC2 <00> UNIQUE Registered
PC2 <20> UNIQUE Registered

So wondering why only 2 entries for each on the W2K machine.

Anyway I continue NET VIEW got MSHOME is not accessible great!.

Oz,

Let's try and organise the diagnostics a bit.

From a command window, run two commands on each PC:
"ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt"
"browstat status >c:\browstat.txt"

Then, open c:\ipconfig.txt and c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, and copy (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) then paste (Ctrl-V) full contents of each file (6 files total) into your
next post.

As far as the nbtstat output interpretation, I believe the long browser Word
document contains a discussion of the datagram type codes (<nn>), in far more
detail than I could provide.
