Net view: no browse list on any computer in network

Hello,

I'm having some networking trouble in my WXP network. I'm using a single
workgroup named 'workgroup'. I found that, after adding a new pc to the
network, I was unable to see a list of clients in My Network Places. I am,
however, able to reach all clients by simply using '\\computername\' in
explorer's address bar, so the clients are all reachable and file and printer
sharing works perfectly. They just won't show up in the network places list.

I tried using net view, and it gave me the dreaded error 6118, mentioning
that the list of servers for this workgroup is not available. After some
troubleshooting, I decided to check the rest of the clients, and it turns out
that they all give the same error when using net view. Except for one
computer, which returns a browse list containing only itself.

I'm concluding, perhaps falsely, that for some reason no browse list is
being maintained in my network. Is this correct? What can be done about it?
What else might be wrong? Any suggestions?

In order for the "browse list" (My Network Places) to be maintained on your
network, one or more computers have to be running the Browser ("Computer
Browser") service.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I've checked the Computer Browser service, but it's
running on all clients in the workgroup. I read some of the articles on your
website, and I've downloaded the browstat utility. On none of the computers
can it find the master browser. "browstat stats" gives me "Unable to query
browser statistics: 87", and when I try "browstat status", it tells me that
Browsing is NOT active on the domain, and that Master name cannot be
determined from GetAdapterStatus.

I'm completely lost now. The Browser service is running on every computer,
and I can access all clients directly by name, but for some reason Browsing
just will not run.

Any thoughts?

Did this problem just start with the new computer?

Please first read about diagnosing problems:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html

Next, provide "browstat status" (yes, that's the right command) and "ipconfig
/all" from the new computer, and from 2 of the existing computers, so we can
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:
