Net Use printer redirection in Vista

Does the net command allow LPT1 to be redirected to a shared printer
like it did in Win2k?

If so, why do I get a system error 5. None of the reasons given in
the KB help.

My clock is right. Thanks for any input

Net Use LPT1 \\machinename\HP9800

Is what I used where machine name is replaced by my machine name.

No help here guys?

I know I am not in the vista group, but since I do not yet have it,
can anyone help with this problem?

What I have is an old DOS legacy app that works great, but ONLY
prints to LPT ports, and my printer is USB.

In past OS iterations, I was able to map to it via NET USE command,
and print to a PRN file, and then drag and drop that file there, or
even print directly through the net use re-mapping.

Anyone know if this is still supported?

I did this last night after the daylight savings thing, and I was
suspecting that the date thing was why I was getting the system error
5. This occurs right after the prompt for user and Pwd.

Not sure though as I am not that intimately familiar with the
security measures in vista for VDMs.

Help, please! :-]

You need to run the NET USE command as Administrator.

on msnews.microsoft.com you can find
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan

You may want to have a look at Printfil to have your DOS jobs automatically
redirected to your networked printer (or any other Windows printer), even on
Vista.
More info and a free trial version is available for download at

MassiveProng,

You need to run the NET USE command as Administrator.

It is run from a VDM, and my login is as an Admin level user. Is
there a way to get an Admin VDM up?
on msnews.microsoft.com you can find
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan

Is this a news server?

Not really wanting a third party applet if Net Use is still around.

Thank for your help, but I'll continue to attempt to solve this
specifically within the windows tools realm.

AHAH!

Thanks! I started my VDM as admin, and the command worked fine!
Thanks... on to see if the app prints now!
