Net Probs with XP Home & XP Pro

J

jquigle1

The setup:

1. AMD 1800xp, 256 RAM, XP Pro
2. PIII, 256 RAM, XP Home
3. Both connected to Linksys Cable/DSL router
4. Router connected to Cable modem
5. Both belong to "MSHOME" workgroup
6. Not utilizing ICS, nor any firewall software
7. There are "shared" folders on each machine
8. Both machines boot to an Administrator level user

Both machines access the internet fine. However, they do not see each
other. Running the network wizards on both machines does nothing and ends
in frustration.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

go to start> run> cmd
this should open a command prompt
type ipconfig /all and hit enter. (both machines)
you should get an IP, Subnet mask, and default gateway #
make sure they look alike, ie:
Box 1:
IP: 204.178.0.1
SM: 255.255.254.0
DG: 204.178.0.0
Box 2:
IP: 204.178.0.2
SM: 255.255.254.0
DG: 204.178.0.0
If so, good.
type ping (box IP address)
you should have 0% loss
do the same for alternate box
If you get 100% Loss, then there is something blocking it,
firewall, etc.

If ping is good:
close command prompt
go to Start> Run> services.msc
double click on the Computer Browser Service.
make sure it's startup type is Automatic.
if not, change it
then restart.

Try that first
good luck
