Hello everyone, I need your help in this problem.
I have a laptop and desktop both WinXP prof. I also have FireWire IEE1394
and RJ-45 on both machines. I set up the network like this:
Desktop IP- 100.1.1.1 (firewire)
100.1.1.3 (ethernet RJ45)
Laptop IP- 100.1.1.2 (firewire)
100.1.1.4 (ethernet rj45)
Subnet is 255.255.255.0 for all connections
I am trying to have DSL connect to desktop and be able to use internet from
laptop.
If I connect my firewire cable, network ok each computer can see the other
and access the other with no problem. Ping and repair connection works ok.
If I use my Ethernet cable (cross over) my laptop can only see the desktop
on MSHOME workgroup but desktop can't see laptop. I checked the cable pin by
pin with multimeter, found ok as per crossover connection. I disabled windows
firewall in laptop. I used the wizard many times, no luck. I configured
manually still same problem, when trying to click on desktop from laptop it
gives error not accessible. I also try ping from DOS on both machines, they
don't see each other.
I went to services to check on Computer Browser service, NetBIOS helper and
found started same with TCP/IP NetBIOS is enabled in both machines LAN
connection. I removed all network bridges.
Last thing I did, I went to regedit and deleted Winsock so windows can
install another one, I am not sure if this would do it or not. Anyway,
nothing happened. Firewire connection works, but Ethernet does not.
I also tried WinsockxpFix.exe that I downloaded from internet, still no
luck. I went to check regedit after WinsockxpFix and found there is no
"NodeType" under NetBT so I added that under parameters with value "4" and is
shows Node Type is Mixed when I type IPCONFIG. Still, I can see my desktop in
MSHOME from laptop but when clicking it says network path not found.
As I said network works ok when using firewire I can ping, see files, copy,
etc..., but I want to have my PC at the office and laptop in the living room.
Please help, thanks
