1394 firewire network trouble

I'm trying to connect my laptop, and desktop via firewire to transfer
files. I've been searching for hours now, and I don't feel any closer
to solving the problem. I have Windows XP MCE, and the firewire is
routing through my desktop to my laptop fine, but I'm not sure how to
transfer files. I used CapDVHS on the laptop to capture my local NBC
station's feed which was routed through the desktop, just to be sure it
was working.
I tried opening networking connections on each computer, and going to
the properties of the 1394 connection, then ip properties and setting
the ip to 192.168.2.1, and subnet to 255.0.0.0 on the desktop, and
192.168.2.2 on the laptop with the same subnet.'
I then went start/run //192.168.2.1 on the laptop, and it said "The
network path was not found".

Maybe I'm way off track. Could someone please help?

I assume that you actually used backslashes: \\192.168.2.1

A FireWire network works just like an Ethernet network. Can the
computers ping each other by IP address? If not, a firewall is
probably blocking access.

Open the 1394 network connection properties and make sure that:

1. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is enabled.

2. Client for Microsoft Networks is enabled.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled in TCP/IP properties | Advanced |
WINS.

Well, let me give you more information. I have Windows MCE on my
desktop and XP SP2 on my laptop. The laptop shows the desktop under
"view workgroup computers", but the desktop doesn't see the laptop.
I'm supposedly sharing folders on the desktop, but none are shown in
"my network places". When I try to view the view the desktop's shares
from the laptop, it says I don't have access priveleges.
I'm trying this over ethernet. It's amazing how difficult this is
proving to be. I've done it many times in the past, but now I don't
know what I'm doing.

Ok, well everything's working over ieee 1394. My network places isn't
working, but I used run, cmd, ipconfig and each computer showed the
firewire ip, and each connected to each other fine. This will be good
enough because I'm sick of messing with it. Just copied my first file
over firewire. A 4 gig file took about a minute. Amazing!

I thought I'd post a quick follow-up for anyone who runs into a similar
problem. I had to go TCP/IP properties, and click the advanced button,
and then "Wins" tab. I had to click "Enable NetBios over TCP/IP".
Once I accessed the shared files(\\192.168.x.x), they became visible in
"My Network Places"
