Net Meeting and Windows XP

I need to manage NT 4.0 servers using Net Meeting. Is
that possible with XP? If Yes, how?

I use NM Remote Desktop to connect to NT servers. It will prompt for a
login name, password and domain. I connect to the servers via a VPN and
then use NM to connect to the servers. The Remote Desktop Service needs
to be running on the servers. Works great.

Terry,

Interesting. Is NM Remote Desktop the same thing as the classic
"NetMeeting" (executable is conf.exe), which is what Bob was asking about.

Or are you using something like the "Remote Desktop" app that is
included with XP Pro? I'm not aware if this client application
available in Win 2k or NT, though and I'm not sure what Bob has. I also
think it would be worth checking that Remote Desktop Services are
available on NT 4 ... my recollection (and I might be wrong) is that
it's included only with the Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition.

In case this doesn't pan out for Bob, there are other alternatives I can
think of also, e.g. the free program "VNC" available from AT&T.

He is describing Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (via the conf.exe
utility).

As for the Remote Desktop client, you can download it from MS at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp for
any 32-bit Windows OS (and available for Mac OSX, WinCE, and
Linux(rdesktop.org))

Jeffrey,

Interesting. I wasn't aware of this download. I no longer

This is the client software, though. This software added to Win 95, 98,
NT, etc. enables the user (client) to connect to an XP Professional
machine with Remote Desktop enabled. In otherwords, same thing an XP
Pro user can do now to connect to another XP Pro machine.

The original question was about accessing NT 4 Server via Netmeeting.
The download you mention isn't going to make an NT Server "callable" is
it? In otherwords, by running this software on an NT 4 server, this
does not enable Remote Desktop, does it? For that the Terminal Server
software is required? And that is an "add-on" to NT 4 (far as I
recall). Am I missing something?

By the way: I use rdesktop on my Linux machines to connect into XP boxes
and it works terrifically.

I guess you have already set up the servers to accept the
incoming call. If not, do the following:

Download the latest Netmeeting from MS download area. Run
Netmeeting and click on Tools, Remote Desktop Sharing
wizard. It may need to install new files and restart the
machine. When this is done, click on File, Exit and
Activate RDS. Server is now ready.

To run Netmeeting from XP, click on Start, Run and then
conf.exe. Netmeeting should start. Connect as normal but
make sure you select Require Security for this Call.

No, the only option to access a NT4 machine (that isn't running
Terminal Server addition) is Netmeeting Remote Desktop sharing or a
third party product like VNC, PC Anywhere, etc.
