Net Logon Fails

G

Guest

I rebooted my SBS 2000 system Thursday night and Net Logon failed to start.
This causes all the Exchange Server services to fail, thus no email for my
company.

When I attempt to start Net Logon I receive the following error message:

"Could not start the Net Logon service on the local computer. Error 1075:
the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

I checked the dependencies.

DNS Server
NT LM Security Support Provider
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
Workstation

And they are all started. (I assume the Server and Workstation are started
as I am on the server at this time.)

The DNS Server (Event Viewer) shows DNS as started.

From the System Log (Event Viewer) selected errors:

Service Control Manager – Event ID 7003: The Net Logon service depends on
the following nonexistent service: 乄S

DCOM – Event ID 10002: Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The
server is: {9DA0E106-86CE-11D1-8699-00C04FB98036} The user is SYSTEM/NT
AUTHORITY, SID=S-1-5-18.

Print – Event ID 33: The PrintQueue Container could not be found because the
DNS Domain name could not be retrieved. Error: 54b

From the Application Log (Event Viewer) selected errors:

MSExchangeSA – Event ID 1005: Unexpected error No site name is available for
this machine. Facility: Win32 ID no: c007077f Microsoft Exchange System
Attendant occurred.

Windows 2000 – 5.00.2195 – Service Pack 4, ISA Server, IIS, Exchange, SQL
Server

I have been working on a solution for two days and have come no closer to
understanding what the source of the problem is. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

[I don't have an answer, but I inserted a FEW thoughts
that might point you towards finding it, or help someone
else to help....]
When I attempt to start Net Logon I receive the following error message:

"Could not start the Net Logon service on the local computer. Error 1075:
the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

If this doesn't resolve by logically finding the
problem, then I would suggest a repair install
from the original CD or system load share.

Run the install, choose same directory, MAKE SURE
that you are asked if you wish to REPAIR. Afterwards,
you can check Windows Update to make sure you are
fully up to date.
I checked the dependencies.

DNS Server
NT LM Security Support Provider
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
Workstation

And they are all started. (I assume the Server and Workstation are started
as I am on the server at this time.)

Probably but not necessary since Server is for providing
services to OTHER computers, and Workstation obtains
those services (file, print, other "built-in" type net services.)

On the other hand, way down in the NetDiag is seems BOTH your
Workstation and Server services have failed to register their
NetBIOS names on the adapters.

NBT tests were passing so it doesn't look like you have turned
of NetBIOS which IS in fact "legal" (although a generally poor
idea.)
The DNS Server (Event Viewer) shows DNS as started.

From the System Log (Event Viewer) selected errors:

Service Control Manager - Event ID 7003: The Net Logon service depends on
the following nonexistent service: ?S

DCOM - Event ID 10002: Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The

AUTHORITY, SID=S-1-5-18.

That sounds like something needs repairing/setting
in the DCOM control panel but I don't know what
specifically.
Print - Event ID 33: The PrintQueue Container could not be found because the
DNS Domain name could not be retrieved. Error: 54b

Herb,

Thank you for your reply.

I attempted a number of things. DNS Configuration Wizard, Active Directory
Configuration Wizard and several other things. They fail because they cannot
connect to a DNS server. I then placed my SBS 2000 Installation Disk in the
drive and selected Setup thinking it would give me the option of repairing.
It also failed due to not being able to register with a DNS server. I will
now take a look at DCOM. I have no other ideas and am quite frustrated.

If you have any other thoughts, I will happily entertain them.

Generally those wizards will hide too much info.

Are you working from the same machine? i.e., the Server-DC?

Open up the DNS Management console (dnsmgmt.msc)
and visually check the server -- is your zone for the domain
there? With a handful of _underscore domains like _msdcs,
_sites, etc?

Try the monitoring tab of properties and see if the DNS passes
the SIMPLE test (and maybe the recursive test.)

Herb,

Yes, I am working from the same machine (mercury) Server-DC.

The Forward Lookup Zones include lumisun.com with _msdcs, _sites, _tcp, and
_udp.

Simple and recursive tests both pass.

Thanks again for your help. I'll keep plugging away.

Herb,

I mistakenly had two threads running for this problem. In the other thread
(Net Logon Failure) Kevin suggested the following modification which solved
the problem.

Thanks for you help!

Using regedt32 (you must use regedt32) go to this key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon
Double click the DependOnService REG_MULTI_SZ value
Only these should be listed:
LanmanWorkstation
LanmanServer
