Windows Update tells me I need this update. I am only a
casual web "surfer" and this product seems to be for
developers. As a casual home user do I need this and if
so, how will I benefit from it? Thanks.

Perry,

You don't need this update - it should also not be under Critical Updates, but Recommended. However, there are more and more
applications likely to be released built using the .Net Framework, and if you have this installed already, it'll make your life and
the developer's life easier. I'm sure MS will also start releasing software built on .Net within the near future.
