I use MSN Messanger 6.1, hotmail (sometimes).

With .net installed the computer doesn't boot into desktop (yea I'm lazy =P)
what is the point of .net for a reg user like me? (games, net surfing,
thats about it)

The .net is a new MS programming language and is begin to be used for
utilities.

You can still make it still go straight to desktop for the user which is
logged on most often even with .net framework installed - I can't remember
how but I'm sure one of the more tech savvy people in here will be able to
help.

The .net framewrok is needed if your using apps that require it. The asp.net
users is needed for the .net framework to work correctly.
To have your computer auto-logon with the .net framewrok installed:
Auto Logon:

Start, run, type in: control userpasswords2, hit enter.

Uncheck: users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.

Xp will then ask you to enter the user and password you want to auto-logon
to.
Or
Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto-logon feature.

If you're not doing any .NET programming, or don't run any programs that
require the Framework to be installed, you probably won't need it. However,
since you already have it installed, I'd recommend leaving it installed,
since many more programs are being developed using .NET these days.

To get back the behavior of automatic logon, you can reference the web site
