Hi,

I want to see negative numbers in parentheses in Excel 2000 SP3 and can't
get it to work. Though regional settings show negative numbers like this
(-1) it's not the case in excel. If I use a custom format it works but just
for the current session. The newly defined format won't remain there for
further Excel session. I also tried to modify the appropriate registry key
according to KB240829 with no success. Is there a way to get this
parentheses to show or it's a bug in Excel 2000?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for replying but please read the post again:

I did try that like I mentionned it though I didn't specifed what was the
format...

You have to set it in Windows first:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Customize
Numbers and then Currency > Select the number format that you want then
you can select the Parentheses option in the Format > Cells > Number dialog
box.

Excel picks this up from a windows setting:

Windows start button|control panel
regional and language options
regional options tab
click the customize button
currency tab
change the negative currency format to show ()'s.

Once again Thanks for replying but please read the post again:

make sure that regional settings was set to use parentheses and it doesn't
work! I tested on more than one PC, had (-1) and (-1$) selected and can't
get it to work in Excel.

Did you then select the required format in the format dialog box?

Yes I did. I tried formatting the cell BEFORE typing in numbers and whether
it's number or currency format, both won't show parentheses but this format:
-1234,54 or -1234,54$

In the format dialogue box, negative numbers with parentheses is not
available at all. I just don't understand. Regional settings is set to show
them but it doesn't. According to the user who requested that type of
format, Excel 97 did that with no problem and he wants to have the same
result in Excel 2000 but only got live the above result.

Note that in Regional Seettings you must make the stting change under the
"Currency" setting, not just the "number".

If I switch from Francais Canada to English US, parentheses are availables
but the dollar sign is in front of the number which aren't the format here
in Canada. Then I customized the dollar sign to show after the number and
kept the English US and parentheses were available. So I have to set the
Country to US and the dollar sign to show after the numbers and it works.

Thanks
