So I'd just boot from a Knoppix CD and access the hard drive that way.

Nobody has the CD disabled as a boot device. It doesn't make sense to.

The BIOS normally has a password protect facility that would do this and
thus prevent anyone gaining access, even through boot disks.

Actually, I just thought about it some more: open the case, remove
the CMOS battery, replace it -- bang, BIOS password gone -- boot up
from a Knoppix CD and access the hard drive that way.
