Need Video Card Recommendation?

J

Let me start off by asking if anyone wants a ATI Radeon 9600 SE???? What a
hunk of junk.

I need to find a video card that will work in my Asus P3V4X Mobo with a 4x
AGP slot.

I want something that will speed up my gaming for the time being until
hopefully next year when my wife finally lets me build a new PC.

Currently running a Diamond Viper V770 32mb video card, and want something
faster.

SUGGESTIONS? Maybe that won't break the bank?

THANKS

You're too far away for me, but I bet you get a fair price with an ebay
auction for your card. What exactly is it doing 'wrong'?

Aren't most 8x cards backward compatible with 4x AGP slots?

What chip is on that card? It sounds pretty old. You should be able to
get a geforce4mx440 card VERY cheaply nowadays, but you may have to do a
little searching online.

I had my 7500 AIW 64mb in a P3V4x 850eb played all games on it...except halo as I really don't care for it. uT, mohaa, max pain,
etc.... Mwave is out of stock at 118$ newegg had them 2 days ago at 115$ darn good for the price and video capture too. Have it in
a P4B266 now and still going strong. Played COD and the like on it, with medium to high settings, enjoyable. I think the AGP in that
slot is 1.5 can't remember off hand.

It looks up whenever it feels like it. I've tried various drivers for
everything on this mobo, vid card, agp slot, etc. I've tried a newer Power
Supply. Tonight I even tried re-installing windows to a formatted drive and
it still hangs. Usually hangs anywhere from the Welcome screen to a few
mins later.

Is the fan working on it? Not that I think it's that, it sounds driver
related.

It's 4in1 driver or otherwise related to the Via chipset. Don't blame the
card because Via chokes when it's installed. THAT is the 'hunk of junk' and
don't be shocked when another card brings it to it's knees. Been down that
road with those Mobo's. One video card brand works fine, it chokes on
another while boths cards run fine on another non-Via system.

Yep, fan is working on it.

Side note: I love this ANTEC TruePower 550 Power Supply. It is so much
quieter than the 300W PSU I had.

Jim, I wouldn't blame the video card necessarily. Sounds like there's a
problem and you don't know exactly what it is yet.

I had a thought, what about this. If you look in the manual for the MOBO it
says the AGP port and PCI Port 1 and 2 share the same IRQ, atleast according
to their table.

I know my nic is in PCI port 1, wonder if that would be it. The
SoundBlaster Liver Value and Hauppauge WinTV PCI are not in PCI Port 1 and
2.

What does everyone think?

when you install new hardware do you use the 'reset configuration data' setting in the bios?

I'm using the Antec 380 and think it's great, too.

I guess that does make sense - the 9xxx series support DirectX 9, right?

Ok, I did the RESET CONFIG DATA in the bios. Now this is where I stand
(also posted to VIA AREAN)

Ok, before re-installing Windows I removed all the cards but the ATI Radeon
9600SE. Still locked up.

So, since I was having to reinstall the OS I installed Win2k Pro. It
installed flawlessly with the ATI card installed the whole time. Upon Win2k
booting up successfully the first time and seeming to be stable (no lock
ups). I installed the NIC Card (Netgear 312) to download the latest 4n1
Drivers. Installed those with no problems. At this point it is just
running on generic video drivers. Before downloading the ATI Drivers, I
applied all Win2k Service packs. So next I downloaded the latest Catalyst
drivers, ver 4.1. Installed those, and immediately upon reboot and trying
to log into windows in locked up. Rebooted, did it again. So I went back
to the last known good config. I download the Omega ATI Driver Pack and
installed it. It installed flawlesly. Reboot went fine. Login to Win2k
went find. Went into the ATI Control Panel and turned VCU Recovery off.
Changed the setting to 1600 x 1200 and said apply, instantly locked up.
Rebooted and went back into Win2k just fine. THought I'd try a different
resolution, set it to 1280 x 1024. Instantly locked up again. So I
rebooted again and changed the settings to 1024x768 and that's where it
stands right now. I would like to go back to 1600 x 1200 but I'm sure it
would lock up.

At this point I am in limbo. Anyone have any thoughts as to why it works at
1024 x 768 but not at the others?

EDIT: Just had the screen go blank on me (BLACK SCREEN). Guess atleast
this time it just didn't lock up. Got something different this time.
