I used to be able to simply type an address in the address window without the
prefix http:// and get to the site, but now I need to include it all the
time. What has happened?
For over a year now I could type in www.google.com and get to google, but
now I need to type in http://www.google.com to get there? (I am using google
as an example, but it is the same with all sites.) This change happened
suddenly, and I don't know why. Can anyone explain how I can get back to the
previous situation? It is much easier to avoid typing http:// for every
address.
Thanks!

Go to Tools
Go to Advanced
Go to Browsing section
Make sure "show friendly URLs" is checked
and "Use inline Autocomplete" is checked

When you type www.google.com in an address bar do you have
http://www.google.com in the dropdown menue ready to jump into place
when you press 'Enter'?.

Thanks, Norisand. I did what you suggested, but unfortunately, the situation
has not changed. I should add that the other computers I have do not have
these items checked, and they work correctly.
Do you have any other ideas?

Have you checked that the important part of the .reg file worked?

Start-Run-REGEDIT
Navigate down to these keys and ensure they are correct:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

ooops!!,
Thanks for the suggestion, but this didn't work either.

Hi Alan,
Now I have checked and the http:// prefix is in fact there. I will probably
have to do a reinstall of IE, I guess.

No...nothing drops down.

This is a roundabout way of testing if you have AutoComplete
for Web Addresses active and working. (Options, Content tab,
AutoComplete Settings dialog)

However, if it was you might be more likely to find a match by starting
to type goo and then either tabbing or cursoring to (or clicking on)
the match in the resulting dropdown list (aka the AutoSuggest list.)
E.g. by the time that I have typed out www. I no longer get a match
either.

BTW you could see the entire AutoSuggest list by clearing the Address bar
entirely and pressing CursorDown (e.g. Alt-d,Delete,CursorDown)

I FINALLY fixed this problem. I had to reinstall Windows, which after a
little wrinkle, seems to have fixed the problem. The wrinkle involved part
of the reinstallation process. Last night I reinstalled Windows, which did
not fix the problem at first. The thing is, the installation was not
complete. I kept getting a prompt to insert a cd to complete the
installationg of something called Photogallery. I had no idea what that was,
and had to escape out of that process. Windows was functional, so I thought I
was done. Everytime I started the machine, however, I was prompted for that
CD...so I went out to the web and found that others had the same problem. The
solution? Well, the photogallery.msi file was on an installation cd for an HP
photosmart printer. There is no photogallery program, but there is a
photogaller.msi file. Once this got installed, and I was back to my desktop,
IE now was working!
So, I guess it was the reinstallation of XP that took care of the situation.
Thanks again to all who responded to my request for help.
