Must type "http://" in address bar

While sipping a glass of wine, I read that acesongs wrote in

That works, thx. I guess now I'll only have to do a lot of typing when
websites don't begin with "www" and end with ".com".

The registry fix didn't solve the problem. I can start with a blank address
bar and type in "www.cnn.com" and the little Explorer icon will show up in
the leftmost part of the bar, but nothing else happens. I think that was
happening before the registry fix. But I still have to type the protocol
prefix "http://" before Explorer actually goes there.

None of the suggestions in the above threads worked for me?
