Clicking link in IE6 opens File Download dialog

This problem just started appearing last week. When I try to access
any pages on certain websites by opening via Favorites, clicking links
to these pages or manually typing the address, IE opens the File
Download dialog instead of going to the requested site. This only
happens on certain sites and the sites are not related to one another.
One site is my personal site, which is just plain ol' HTML pages, no
ASP, PHP or anything else.

One interesting thing, the dialog only appears if I don't specify the
exact name of the file (ie, i just use the root directory). For
example, www.cnn.com would open the dialog, but www.cnn.com/index.html
would function correctly.

Any ideas? This is happening on my work computer, so I don't have
access to the Registry.

Thanks!

So it probably also works if you put a protocol prefix on?

Looks like the filetype associations for the .com extension
are nonstandard.

E.g. in a cmd window enter (for display):

assoc .com
and (assuming that returns comfile= )
ftype comfile

You might be able to restore the default associations with
an IE Repair (ref KB194177)

This is happening on my work computer, so I don't have
access to the Registry.

Then speak with your administrator.
