Need to Start Over

I have a failed install of XP Pro.
After the first reboot, it is stuck in a splash screen, blue screen with
error and a reboot.

If I try to start over, it picks up with the reboot scenario.

How can I back up the install to where it will restart the install by
copying files over etc?

What is it seeing that keeps it from starting from the beginning?

Boot from CD.
Erase the partition(s).
Create new partition(s).
Install.
