Need to sort the lines in a text file.

I copied the contents of two text files and pasted them into word2007.

I turn on the paragraph mark and notice the following:
The text from one file has a small square with tails at the corners at the
end of each line.
The text from the other file also has them but it has in addition a little
larger rendering of the symbol at the right extreme of each line.
That is, for this text, there is the small symbol, some space like its
tabbed and the symbol again but a little larger.

What are they?

Also I'd like to make all lines equal so can I delete the extra symbols or
add them to the lines without them?

Finally and most important:
I want to sort the lines using the characters at the beginning of the lines.

I tried the sort symbol on the home page after selecting all text but it
does not sort.
Doing that I have two options: paragraph and Field 1.
I've tried both.

I also selected the make number list to number all the lines and tried to
sort the result, but that didn't work either.

Also I think word is treating the two sets of text differently because there
is a little line at the left between them.
Sometimes that line is a symbol containing four arrows.

Guess I need help now.

Thanks

If you click in the text are the Table Tools contextual tabs displayed? That
would be my expectation given your description of what sound like
end-of-cell and end-of-row markers. If so, on the Layout tab, click on View
Gridlines, and you can see the table layout. If you want to treat the
content as text, you'll need to use the Convert to Text button on the far
right end of the Layout tab.

You have it exactly correct.
But I don't see under table tools a way to sort the rows.
Isn't that someplace?

On the Layout tab, at the far right end, in the Data group along with
Convert to Text, is the Sort button.
