Need to replace installation CD

I have Windows XP Professional SP2 Build 2600 gdr.070227-2254 on my laptop.
I have the key for it as well. Since I got a used laptop from my dad, I
didn't get an XP cd. He doesn't have the CD. I need to replace the CD
because I need to reinstall Windows. Somebody told me that XP is available
for download off the Microsoft site as long as you have the key, which I
have. I've looked everywhere on Microsoft.com that I can think of. A) Is
that true? B) Link me, please.

You should know if this is an OEM or retail copy. Is there a sticker
on the bottom of Laptop?

Downloads you may be seeing here are reference to the Service Pack 3
that is out. Not Windows.

I've seen reference to a replacement cd from MS. REPLACEMENT MS CDs -

You can get more info by going to

and putting in a search for 'replacement cd'.
This is how I found these older messages. This has been asked over and
over lately since people seem to be needing a reload the past few weeks.

The only way to download Windows XP from Microsoft is with a subscription to
one of their programs like MSDN. These subscriptions are very expensive.
However if you have a legitimate key you can simply find a person who has a
Retail version of Windows XP Professional and burn yourself a copy. Use your
legitimate key to do the install on your system.

That "someone" told you incorrectly. The only legitimate to download
any Microsoft operating system would be if you have a very expensive
MSDN subscription.

As you apparently have a factory installed version of WinXP, your only
possible source (other than going out and buying a new license) would be
to contact the laptop's manufacturer for assistance.
