I have inherited some presentations that when I open them tell me that there
is embedded read-only text and then doesn't allow me to change the
presentation.

It does say embedded font I did check the fonts but I seem to have them all.
I cannot believe that there is not an easy way to change this.

Thanks

We all have our troubles with this one. A couple of people at MS have very sore
ears over it. ;-)

How did you verify that you have all the fonts?
If Arial Black is called for, do you also have Arial Black Italic?

Steve,

Under "replace" I have a question mark by "MS PGothic" does this mean I
don't have this, if so how do I get it I'm trying to find this on microsofts
home page but no luck as of yet.

Yes, the question mark means that's the missing font.

Seems that it's a Japanese font.

Download and install the Japanese language pack. Hopefully that'll do it.

I did add the font and language and now it is not grey any more which is
good, but I still get the same message when opening these presentations

The question mark means that the presentation calls for the font but it's not present
on your system. PowerPoint's using some other font as a substitute.

Missing fonts won't cause the presentation to open read-only though, only embedded
ones with certain properties.

The link Sonia posted (http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00637.htm) gives examples
of the icons for both normal TT on your system and embedded TT fonts. Have you
checked for embedded ones? These are the ones that'll cause the R/O problem.
