Need to put small upper 4 in a problem - how to do?

If you mean a superscript number 4, type the 4, select it, go to Format--Font
and check the box for Superscript. Remember to turn off the Superscript for
the next character if necessary.
 
Or select the 4 & CTRL+SHIFT+'+'
