Need to format a NEW hard drive via USB (enclosure) - how to?

I have a hard drive enclosure housing a new Western Digital HD. I
have plugged it into the computer and it recognizes the USB device,
but does not show it in the windows explorer. I am assuming I have to
format it first, but I am not sure how to do this without being able
to see the drive in Windows.

I am sure it is a simple fix, any help would be great

Right click My Computer and select Manage from the menu.
In Computer Management, click on Disk Management in the left hand pane.
Does your USB drive show up in the right hand pane?
If it does, you can right click on it and create a partition which you can then
format.

Good luck

Please be sure to convert to Basic rather than dynamic, you will be
happier.

He will also be happier to know he needs to go into disk management to
initialise and format the drive.
