Need to Boot from USB in XP Home

Guest

Hi

I have an HP Omnibook Laptop. A power surge burnt out my CD drive. I now need to reinstall Windows XP home (virus and cluttered hard drive). But I can't. The Bios System only recognises the internal unit. I have a USB Iomega CDRW drive. I have downloaded the floppy boot disks and can see the e: drive, but cannot run the recovery disk from it.

I have tried downloading duse, and varios USB drivers and putiing them on a boot floppy, with no success.

IS there a way to boot from my USB device?

If your BIOS does not see your external USB drive, then you cannot boot from it.
This is strictly a BIOS limitation issue. You'll have to replace your internal CD Drive.

You still have a working floppy correct? Have you downloaded the Windows XP
BOOT discs? Do you have the Windows XP drivers for your CD ROM? When you
boot from the BOOT press F6 several times as SETUP starts, the screen turns
blue, it should post a message on the bottom if you want to use different
drivers to press F6. When it prompts you use the disc with the Windows XP
drivers for your CD ROM .

This should give you the option during the install to use your USB CD ROM
drive as the source for your Windows XP install. You might not be able to
run the recovery, but try installing over your current installation without
reformatting. You will have to reinstall your applications if this is your
only choice. However try the recovery and see what happens and report your
findings back here.
