need some quick advice...

I have an extra processor left over from helping a friend out and I've
offered it around town to a couple of people for $200 and they all tell me
I'm crazy for wanting that much money. I paid $260 for it a couple of months
at mwave.com and it's still selling for around $220 + s/h...

AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ W/512KB CACHE 90NM (VENICE) 64-BIT SOCKET 939 RETAIL
BOXED W/COOLING FAN (3 YEARS WARRANTY)

Am I crazy for asking that much?

No, you're reasonable in your selling price. It's simply that those buyers
may be looking for a steal instead of a relatively OK deal, and or they are
weighing things such as it being unused or having been in another system
first, or it's warranty coming from a second party rather than they buying
it first from the dealer. If you're looking to unload it fast you may have
to drop the price a bit more than you're thinking right now for the cost
difference that someone could buy it from a dealer and get all those secure
feelings that the first party seller offers. Unfortunately the longer you
hold onto it the more it will probably drop in price.

It's used and s/h doesn't factor into the value. $20.00 isn't much of
a savngs on a used cpu. The buyer gets no warranty on a usd cpu.
I think your asking price is a bit high.

The buyer is trading new for used for a 10% - 12%discount. I don't think
many people in the CPU market would do that. You're not crazy, just dazed a
bit by the realities of the aftermarket.

I paid $550.00 CAD for my ATI 9800pro and it still sells for about
$200.00 CAD. I sold it for $100.00 CAD. Once hardware is used I usualy
discount it by 50% depending on how old it is. I guess I give good
deals.

Used computer components go for no more than half of original price and
often less. I know, you don't consider it "used", but as a practical matter
it is.

The more cynical among us *might* think that this is a clever method for
placing an ad in a non-"forsale" newsgroup and not get flamed for it.

I never said that the processor was used, the processor is brand new and has
never been installed.
All I did was break the seal on the box to make sure everything was good...
the processor has never been out of the box.

And sorry for the late reply but my BellSouth newsgroup access has been down
for some reason.

The purchaser doesn't get the manufacturer's warranty so therefore it
is as good as used.

no I'd be selling it locally to a friend or someone in a friend's office. I
don't like having to mess with shipping a long distance payments.

If I had a chance to buy one from you for only $20 less than I can buy a
brand new one with a full warranty (even if yours is still in celophane,
boxed, the warranty started the day you bought it) and I'm a lot more
comfortable that it'll be trouble free, and I'm getting it from a reputable
supplier, vs. someone off the street, then I'll gladly pay the extra $20 for
the brand new one. So, yes, you are crazy. Ask about $150 or so and you'll
probably find some takers.

Broken seal = used, no matter if it was ever installed or not. Besides, your
warranty started the day you bought it, and I don't believe it's
transferrable. Would you buy a processor that's 'supposedly' new in a box
with a broken or non-existent wrapper for $20 less than you could buy it for
somewhere else with a full warranty? If we were talking $20 vs. $40, the
answer might be yes, but when we're talking $200 vs. $220, I doubt you
would.
